Statement by Russian MFA Deputy Spokesman Boris Malakhov Regarding the Agreement to Hold an Inter-Korean Summit

By SOP newswire

We sincerely welcome the North-South agreement to hold a second inter-Korean summit in Pyongyang on August 28-30. Hopefully the modalities of this major event whose significance extends far beyond the Asia-Pacific Region will become known soon after the completion of preparatory talks.

The decision to arrange a meeting between Chairman Kim Jong Il of the DPRK National Defense Commission and President Roh Moo Hyun of the Republic of South Korea evidences that the tendency for dialogue and cooperation, commenced by the first North-South summit in June 2000, prevails on the Korean Peninsula. Russia has always been supportive of steps by the two Korean states toward a peaceful reunification of the country through their own efforts.

We hope that the upcoming summit will promote the strengthening of peace, stability and cooperation on the Korean Peninsula and in Northeast Asia as a whole and will give a new political impetus to the process of the Korean nuclear problem settlement and normalization of relations of the DPRK with the key powers of the region and will facilitate transferring large trilateral partnership projects between Russia and North and South Korea onto a practical plane.
