Sergey Lavrov Meets with Israeli First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Tzipi Livni
On September 24, a meeting between Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergey Lavrov and Israeli First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Tzipi Livni took place in New York on the sidelines of the 62nd session of the UN General Assembly.
Talks focused mainly on the situation in the Middle East with emphasis on the necessity of stabilizing the conditions there and overcoming the consequences of confrontation as soon as possible. The Russian side drew attention to the importance of coordinated efforts aimed at preventing escalation of the present crisis, of preparing conditions for the normalization of Palestinian-Israeli relations and of advancing a comprehensive settlement of the Middle East conflict on an internationally recognized basis.
Concern over the sharp deterioration of the humanitarian situation in the Palestinian territories, especially in the Gaza Strip, was expressed and the need for urgent measures to remedy it and solve acute socioeconomic problems in the region was noted. The Russian side underscored the necessity of ensuring unimpeded delivery of humanitarian aid to the population of Gaza.
Practical questions of Russian-Israeli relations were touched on. The ministers approved the text of a joint statement of the Russian and Israeli foreign ministers on the intention to explore the possibility of concluding a bilateral agreement to lift visa requirements for mutual trips of citizens (posted on the Russian MFA website).
