Barack Obama: Qualified, Experienced And Patriotic

Barack Obama: Qualified, Experienced And Patriotic

By Robert Paul Reyes

Nedra Pickler of the Associated Press wrote an article about how conservatives are questioning Sen. Barack Obama's patriotism:

"Sen. Barack Obama's refusal to wear an American flag lapel along with a photo of him not putting his hand over his heart during the National Anthem led conservatives on Internet and in the media to question his patriotism.

Now Obama's wife, Michelle, has drawn their ire, too, for saying recently that she's really proud of her country for the first time in her adult life.

Conservative consultants say that combined, the cases could be an issue for Obama in the general election if he wins the nomination, especially as he runs against Vietnam War hero Sen. John McCain." *******************

"Patriotism the first refuge of a scoundrel” and some conservatives are trying to smear Obama, a patently nice and decent guy, with the unpatriotic label.

I cherish the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution, as well as the images and icons that symbolize our great democracy.

But like Sen. Obama I am hesitant to wear an American flag lapel because it seems only pro-war neocons wear deck themselves with images of Old Glory.

To unilaterally and preemptively invade a country that didn't pose an imminent threat to us is the most un-American act imaginable. I don't want to give anyone the impression that I support an unethical, immoral and insane war.

I have attended hundreds of sporting events where the National Anthem is played. I usually have my hand over my heart, but sometimes I'm rubbing my head or scratching my rear end. Only an anal-retentive pinhead would make a federal case because for a couple of seconds Obama was caught not having his hand over his heart during the National Anthem.

Presidential candidates and their surrogates give hundreds of speeches, it's to be expected that they sometimes say things they regret. I'm sure that Michelle Obama has been proud of her country on many occasions; what she was trying to express is that Obama's success is the proudest moment of her life.

Only a Republican desperate to prevent Obama from becoming president would attempt to portray him as unpatriotic. Democrats will not be swift boated again; we will not allow conservatives to prevail with their dirty politics.
