Nevada Governor To Bill Fossett's Widow For Search Expenses

Nevada Governor To Bill Fossett's Widow For Search Expenses

By Robert Paul Reyes

"Nevada's governor intends to ask the widow of missing multimillionaire Steve Fossett to help pay the state's $687,000 tab in the unsuccessful search for the famed adventurer last fall, the governor's spokesman said Thursday.

Ben Kieckhefer, press secretary for Gov. Jim Gibbons, said any assistance from the Fossett family would be voluntary.

"We are going to request that they help offset some of these expenses, considering the scope of the search, the overall cost as well as our ongoing budget difficulties," Kieckhefer told The Associated Press." Quotation from the Associated Press

Some pundits argue that the governor should leave the grieving widow alone, but she's had enough time to lament her loss. Fossett took off on his pleasure flight September of last year, and he was declared legally dead Feb 15 by an Illinois judge.

Fossett's widow is a multimillionaire, a few hundred thousands dollars is pocket change for her.

This story brings up the larger issue of who should be financially responsible for search and rescue operations of missing thrill seekers. Any fool, regardless if he is an average Joe or a millionaire, who goes mountain climbing in the middle of winter should be billed for the rescue operations if he gets lost in a blizzard.

I wish Mrs. Fossett well, and I hope she does the right thing and helps defray the expenses incurred in searching for her husband.
