"Deep-seated racial misgivings could cost Barack Obama the White House if the election is close, according to an AP-Yahoo News poll that found one-third of white Democrats harbor negative views toward blacks " many calling them `lazy,` `violent,` responsible for their own troubles.
The poll, conducted with Stanford University, suggests that the percentage of voters who may turn away from Obama because of his race could easily be larger than the final difference between the candidates in 2004 " about two and one-half percentage points."

I`m not a Democrat, I`m an independent liberal who usually votes for the Democratic candidates. I find it disheartening and disappointing that so many white Democrats still cling to negative stereotypes of African Americans. I`ve been on cloud nine ever since Obama made history by becoming the first African American to be nominated for president by a major party, and now this depressing poll has brought me back down to earth.
In my neighborhood and at work I am well acquainted with many blacks who are the antithesis of the negative stereotype of blacks as lazy and violent. In our integrated society most white Americans come into daily content with decent, hardworking and bright persons of color -- how can they still embrace such a low opinion of their fellow black Americans?
Sen. Barack Obama is a low-key, extremely bright, well-educated and driven individual; Democrats of all races should be proud to support him. Obama represents the best of America, and this Latino columnist is doing all he can to get him elected.
I was brought up to always look at the bright side; I hope that the two thirds of white Democrats who are not racist will vote for Obama in November. After eight years of an Obama administration, I hope that less white Americans will have an unfavorable view of blacks.
