Murtha Apologizes For Calling Western Pennsylvania "Racist"

By Robert Paul Reyes

Pennsylvania Rep. John Murtha, a supporter of Barack Obama`s presidential bid, apologized Thursday for calling western Pennsylvania `a racist area.`

`While we cannot deny that race is a factor in this election, I believe we`ve been able to look beyond race these past few months, and that voters today are concerned with the policy differences of our two candidates and their vision for the future of our great country,` he said in a statement issued by his office.

Western Pennsylvania

Murtha has correctly pointed out that John McCain is too old to serve as president; I would add that Murtha, 76, is too old to serve in Congress. Americans should throw these old fogies out of Congress, they are too out of touch to serve their constituents and our country.

Sen. Barack Obama has done a commendable job of not resorting to racial politics, he presents himself as a leader for all of America. Murtha is working contrary to the interests of Obama by brining up the race issue. I`m not familiar with Pennsylvania, but even if it`s true that there are many racists in western Pennsylvania, Murtha should have kept that information to himself.

Obama`s message of hope and change has failed to resonate with the Pennsylvania`s white working class, it`s imperative that prominent Democrats like Murtha refrain from playing the race card.

In the closing weeks of the election McCain and especially Sarah Palin have been subliminally playing the race card, the last thing Obama needs is for his supporters to overtly inject race into the campaign.
