Barack Obama Has No Funny Bone?
President-elect Barack Obama has many outstanding virtues, he`s eloquent, intelligent, patient and wise, but humor is not his forte. At the Alfred E. Smith Dinner in October, McCain and Obama both had their turns at the podium to deliver a stand-up-routine. McCain was pitch-perfect, he brought the house down with his hilarious jokes, poor Obama on the other hand only managed to elicit sympathy applause.
Obama recently proved once again that he needs to hire a good comedy writer:
"Of the two awkward attempts at humor during President-elect Barack Obama`s first press conference, his reference to not talking to dead presidents is the one that has received most of the attention.
`I didn`t want to get into a Nancy Reagan thing about, you know, doing any seances,` Obama said Friday.
But over the weekend, parts of the blogosphere also commented on the other joke, which he made in regard to choosing a puppy for his daughters.
`On the other hand, our preference would be to get a shelter dog, but, obviously, a lot of shelter dogs are mutts like me.`"
Obama should have left out the Nancy Reagan joke, the elderly and ailing widow of President Reagan deserves to be treated with respect. I also found his mutt crack a bit uncomfortable, biracial and multiracial Americans should be addressed with respect. My mom was Mexican and French and my dad was Venezuelan and Dutch; I prefer to be referred to as multiethnic or Hispanic.
But I quibble, I am thrilled by Obama`s victory. I know he`s going to be an excellent commander-in-chief, I can live with the fact that he won`t be a very funny comic-in-chief.
