Pastor Rick Warren To Deliver Barack Obama Invocation
Next month President-elect Barack Obama will be inaugurated as the 44th President of the United States. Millions are expected to attend this momentous event that some historians claim signals a post-racial America. Obama is a transformational figure who represents change and the promise of equality for all Americans regardless of ethnicity, gender or sexual orientation.
I was shocked to learn that this statesman who transcends politics and embraces all peoples has selected Rick Warren, the evangelical pastor and the author of the gazillion-selling "The Purpose Driven Life," to deliver the invocation at his inauguration.
Rick Warren is not in the same mold as the late Jerry Falwell or Pat Robertson; he is more forward-thinking and has embraced some so-called liberal causes like global warming and AIDS awareness.
However Warren is a vehement opponent of abortion and same-sex marriage, in fact he vigorously supported California`s homophobic Prop 8.
At the dawn of his administration Obama is sending the wrong message: He is willing to alienate gays and lesbians if it means making inroads in the evangelical community.
I believe that it`s a serious breach of the doctrine of separation of church and state for a minister to play any part in an inauguration, but if Obama was hell-bent on having a preacher deliver an invocation, why didn`t he choose one who doesn`t consider gays and lesbians second-class citizens.
I don`t understand Ocala`s infatuation with controversial ministers; you`d think he would have learned his lesson by now. Obama`s associations with "Men of God" like Rev Wright, Father Flager and Minister Farrakhan have brought him nothing but misery.
I think Obama will be a great president, but we liberals must hold his feet to the fire. I will be the first one to criticize him when he makes a mistake, and he is starting his new administration by making a huge blunder.
