Is Meghan McCain The Only Cool Republican?
"I love to wear black. I think government is best when it stays out of people`s lives and business as much as possible. I love punk rock. I believe in a strong national defense. I have a tattoo. I believe government should always be efficient and accountable. I have lots of gay friends. And yes, I am a Republican." Meghan McCain
Meghan McCain delivered this speech at the annual convention of the Log Cabin Republicans. The address by the 24-year-old daughter of John McCain was very well received by the gay GOP organization. (Why any gay person would belong to the Republican party is a subject for another day.)
Meghan declared that old-guard Republicans are scared sh**less of the future. Conservative Republicans aren`t oblivious to the fact that demographics and and social mores are rendering their lily-white party irrelevant. Yes. they are so scared silly.
The Grand Tired Old Pary is trying to appear hip by embracing technology, in the words of Meghan:
"Republicans using Twitter and Facebook isn`t going to miraculously make people think we`re cool again."
The only way for the GOP to remain a major party is by attracting more intelligent, outspoken women like Meghan who embrace diversity and aren`t afraid of change.
If the Republican Party nominates another dinosaur like John McCain in the 2012 presidential election it might mean the end of the GOP as a major party. John McCain isn`t a foaming-in-the-mouth homophobe, but he hasn`t lifted a finger to help homosexuals achieve equality.
Meghan`s speech was honest, eloquent and it struck the right tone, but at the end of the day they were just words. We need more than words for the GOP; I`m still waiting for Republican senators and congresspersons to support bills protecting the rights of migrants, women, and homosexuals.
