Obama Betrays Gay Community
"Gay rights groups expressed dismay with the Obama administration Friday over its championing of the Defense of Marriage Act, a law the president pledged to try to repeal while on the campaign trail.
The government filed a motion late Thursday to dismiss the case of Arthur Smelt and Christopher Hammer, who are challenging the 1996 federal act. The law prevents couples in states that recognize same-sex unions from securing Social Security spousal benefits, filing joint taxes and other federal rights of marriage.
U.S. Department of Justice lawyers argued that the act - known informally as DOMA - is constitutional and contended that awarding federal marriage benefits to gays would infringe on the rights of taxpayers in the 30 states that specifically prohibit same-sex marriages." "Don`t Ask, Don`t Tell" and "DOMA" are two outrages against the gay community that Obama promised to repeal when he was running for president.
Now that Obama is firmly ensconced in the Oval Office, the president feels he can ignore issues that are important to gays and lesbians. Obama is in no hurry to get rid of the two dismal legacies from the Clinton administration.
Obama has been a dervish tackling every major issue: The economy, foreign policy, the environment, health care. Everything but DOMA, Don`t Ask, Don`t Tell, and same-sex marriage.
Miss California Carrie Prejean got a lot of heat for her stand against same-sex marriage, but we seem to forget that Obama holds the very same view. Even Dick Cheney has come out in support of same-sex marriage, why is Obama getting a free pass from the left?
Not only is Obama not lifting a finger to repeal DOMA, his lawyers are fighting to keep DOMA the law of the land.
Obama needs to speak honestly and truthfully to the gay community, and explain to them why he is ignoring them. Mr. President speak from your heart, don`t read from a TelePrompTer.
