Cuban Icon Fidel Castro: Right-wingers Hate Obama Because He's Black

By Robert Paul Reyes

"President Barack Obama is trying to make positive changes in the United States, but is being fought at every turn by right-wingers who hate him because he is black, former Cuban leader Fidel Castro said on Tuesday.

In an unusually conciliatory column in the state-run media, Castro said Obama had inherited many problems from his predecessor, George W. Bush, and was trying to resolve them. But the `powerful extreme right won`t be happy with anything that diminishes their prerogatives in the slightest way.`" Reuters

Former Cuban leader Fidel Castro may be in poor health, but his mind is still as sharp as a tack. Castro, who writes regular editorials for Cuba`s state-run media is more insightful about American politics than most American pundits. Castro`s newspaper column should be syndicated in the United States for the enlightenment of the American public.

Castro cut right to the chase: Obama is being fought at every turn by right-wingers who hate him because he is black. Some conservatives are apoplectic because a black man is president of the United States. They can`t say what they really believe, and complain that an African-American shouldn`t be commander-in-chief. Instead they try to delegitimze Obama by claiming that he wasn`t born in this country, and therefore shouldn`t be president. It`s not just a few militia wackos who belong to the birther cult, prominent members of Congress have voiced support for this crazy notion.

Obama is an all-American success story with a sterling resume: Graduate of Harvard Law School, successful author, former senator, devoted father and husband. Obama is one of us, a man from a humble background who reached the pinnacle of political power through hard work and perseverance.

But Obama`s right-wing critics hurl insults like "socialist" and "pal of terrorists" at the president in an attempt to portray him as "the other." Don`t be fooled by these hatemongers, read Obama`s autobiography and you will see that he is a regular guy.

There are decent Republicans who oppose the president on philosophical grounds, not because he is black. But no intelligent person can deny that racism is fueling a lot of the attacks on Obama.

Sometimes it takes someone from the outside to point out the obvious. We owe a debt of gratitude to Fidel Castro, for pointing out that America is far from a post-racial utopia
