An aide to the Defense Secretary has quit saying that the government can no longer justify the increasing numbers of war dead and wounded on the grounds that they are helping to make the UK`s streets safe from terrorism.

On the same day that the death toll in the region went up to 212, former army major Eric Joyce told the government to plan an exit strategy as soon as it possibly could.

But is he right? Is there no connection between what is happening on the ground over there and what is happening (or could happen in the future) in our streets?
