Elections vital to transition from war to peace, U.S. says

The United States warned leaders of the Democratic Republic of the Congo not to delay parliamentary and presidential elections scheduled for July 30, according to the Department of State July 7.

Commending the "great progress" that Congo has made in the transition to democracy since the Global and Inclusive Agreement of 2002, the U.S. urged its leaders to "ensure the conditions necessary for free and fair elections."

The text of the statement is available on the Department of State Web site.
