The George Washington University and Georgetown University`s Iranian Cultural Societies Present The Bakhtiari Alphabet

By Jennifer L. Hernandez

Fairfield, CT- Following seven years of in-depth educational research in Iran, Professor Cima Sedigh announces the presentation of her documentary, The Bakhtiari Alphabet, in conjunction with The George Washington University and Georgetown University`s Iranian Cultural Societies. The film will be presented on February 27, 2010 at 7:30pm in the Amphitheater of The George Washington University.

On April 3, 2009, over 750 individuals gathered in the Edgerton Center for the Performing Arts, at Sacred Heart University, for the premiere of The Bakhtiari Alphabet. And at the request of admirers, the documentary returned for a second showing on November 6, 2009.

The documentary follows seven years of in-depth educational research in Iran by Professor Sedigh, who directed alongside Reza Ghadiani. Through cold winters, howling wind, and severe snow storms, the crew triumphed over the elements with ardent passion to capture the true voyage of the Bakhtiari tribe.

Set against the back drop of the stunning Bakhtiari Mountains of Iran, The Bakhtiari Alphabet chronicles the migratory journey of the Bakhtiari tribe as they endure travails and rejoice in cultural achievements. The Bakhtiari tribe exhibits an affinity towards the natural world and an immeasurable strength and stamina to withstand their seasonal migration. These qualities and way of living are being infringed upon by an educational curriculum that does not parallel their daily lives and inherited responsibility to safeguard the ancient tradition of nomadic pastoralism.

This documentary delves into the struggle of incorporating a relevant curriculum into migratory schooling with the precision of an artist. From the stark seasonal contrasts to the perpetual evolution of time, which exists in the cinematographic elements of The Bakhtiari Alphabet, a culture in danger of losing its ancient traditions is unveiled.
