Department of State to Host Religious Freedom Commemorative Event

The Office of International Religious Freedom is hosting a commemoration of the 25th anniversary of the UN Declaration on the Elimination of All Forms of Intolerance and Discrimination Based on Religion and Belief. The event will be held Monday, October 30, 2006, from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the Loy Henderson Auditorium.

Distinguished keynote speakers include the Honorable Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, UN Special Rapporteur for Freedom of Religion or Belief Asma Jahangir, Under Secretary for Democracy and Global Affairs Paula Dobriansky, and Ambassador-at-Large for International Religious Freedom John Hanford. Both domestic and international issues will be covered.

This event is open for press coverage. There will be brief period of Q&A following an academic panel discussion. Questions will be limited to commemoration participants including representatives of NGOs, foreign embassies, and U.S. Government personnel.

Media representatives may attend this briefing upon presentation of one of the following: (1) a U.S. Government-issued identification card (Department of State, White House, Congress, Department of Defense, or Foreign Press Center), (2) a media-issued photo identification card, or (3) a letter from their employer on letterhead verifying their employment as a journalist, accompanied by an official photo identification (driver’s license or passport).
