Controversial Church Sign: God Love You, Allah Hates

By Robert Paul Reyes

"JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- `God Loves You, Allah Hates,` reads a sign posted outside a Mandarin church. The marquee has grabbed the attention of some and offended others.

One woman said the sign in front of First Conservative Baptist Church is a display of hatred right in her neighborhood.

Channel 4 tried to talk with the pastor to get his side of the story, but reporter Karin Hirschey said he basically hung up on her. The Muslim community said it too is being shut out."

A church shouldn`t be an isolated enclave, it should minister and reach out to every segment of the community. The Jesus Christ of the Gospels urged his followers to love their neighbors. Christ would never have put up such a hateful message on the marque of a house of worship.

Not only is the sign a message of intolerance and hatred, but it`s also simplistic and childish. It reminds me of my childhood days in the playground: My dad can kick your dad`s butt! But at least my father was a real person, the pastor of the First Conservative Baptist Church can offer no proof that his god is real. I guess a better example is two young boys debating who is the greatest superhero: Spiderman or Superman.

If God loves everyone, then the parishioners of the controversial church should seek to he like Him, and demonstrate love to everyone in their community, including the Muslims.

I believe in free speech and the pastor has the right to put up any sign he wants, but I hope he sees the light and takes it down.
