SOP Battle of the Bands Featuring Yakuza Heart Attack with Goodbye Rainbow Road

By SOP newswire2

"[L]ike Weezer trapped inside a Gameboy and knowing that rocking is the only way to break out." - Popmatters

"This adventurous keyboardcentric outfit draws from progressive rock, classical, post-punk, soundtrack music, new wave and more to create intricate and evocative soundscapes that seem tailor-made for some postmodern action flick." - Don Thrasher (Guided By Voices)

"[A] concise microcosm of a surprising amount of what`s good in instrumental electronic music. YHA`s math/new-wave/prog/bit-pop hybrid leaves the gimmicks to the gimmicky and cuts a few trails of its own." - Tiny Mix Tapes

For their sophomore album, Yakuza Heart Attack have ditched the guitars, creating a joyous, propulsive work dedicated to the analog synthesizer. Their music, often compared to old video game soundtracks, film scores, and 70s progressive rock, seems antithetical to the musical history of their hometown, Dayton Ohio. Not limited by any region, Yakuza Heart Attack II is the product of the information age, a mixture of age-old classical ambition and 90s cultural ephemera that seems to mean different things to different people, depending on where you were in 1995. That is to say, some can only hear the rumblings of ELP and King Crimson in Yakuza Heart Attack`s sound, others can`t get past a resemblance to Nintendo compositions, while even more hear a dirty, distorted, DIY aesthetic scraping against the often saccharine melodies. Indeed, the music here relies on a homemade style, enabling Yakuza Heart Attack`s simple love of sound and composition to show through any single style or genre.

RIYL: Prog without lame blues solos, Ennio Morricone, Deerhoof, Super Mario Bros, Edgard Varèse, Can, Wendy Carlos, Mastadon, Gustav Mahler, etc.
