They Live Therefore They Are
Paralympic Day was held in Tehran and 29 provinces of Iran with 17,000 disabled participants on Oct. 25.
Iran’s capital, Tehran is regarded as the center sport of the country, hosted 1,700 handicapped and blind people at Shiroudi Stadium in the center of the city. Disabled boys and girls were carried by the envoys that take care of them during the commemoration that they were holding for the fourth time.
Briton Philip Craven, head of the International Paralympic Committee has already paid tribute to Iran for commemorating Paralympic Day and named Iran as the leading country in the paralympic field. His message was read in Tehran and 29 provinces as well, while the participants participated in sports such as Football CP (Football 7-a-side), Wheelchair Basketball and Karate, as spectators were all cheering and hooraying.
The Paralympic derives from the Greek "para" ("beside" or "alongside") and thus refers to a competition held in parallel with the Olympic Games. There is no relation with paralysis or paraplegia , however, the word Paralympic was originally a portmanteau combining 'paraplegic' and 'Olympic' according to Wikipedia.
"Iranian disabled athletes are getting prepared to participate in Beijing’s 2008 Paralympic Games and the events such as "Paralympic Days" will assist the responsible to find new talent for replacing the veterans,” Iran’s Paralympic Secretary General was quoted as saying.
At the end of the Day, disabled athletes walked away happy from the saloons after a two-hour celebration which had a great message on behalf of all participants:" We live therefore we are".
