Federer Ties The Knot With Long-Time Fiancee

By Christopher HIllenbrand

Roger Federer, the ATP Men`s number two seeded player in the world, revealed that he and his long-time fiancee Mirka Vavrinec got married in his home town of Basel, Switzerland, on Saturday.

Federer met Vavrinec in the midst of the Sydney Olympic games in 2000 where they both represented Switzerland in singles` competition.

In March, Federer posted news on www.rogerfederer.com announcing the birth of the couple`s first child this coming summer.

Though he had originally planned to play fewer clay tournaments in 2009 than in the past, Federer now has agreed to participate in the first claycourt tourney of the ATP season, the Monte Carlo Masters, which is the starting point that culminates at the French Open. Federer has yet to claim a Grand Slam at the French Open, the only Slam on claycourt where he`s fallen to the current number one men`s player Rafael Nadal the last three years running.

Roger Federer`s unprecedented streak of holding the number one ranking for 237 consecutive weeks came to a dramatic end when Federer lost to Rafael Nadal at the former`s favored court at Wimbledon and Nadal later adorned that title on August 17,2008.

Since August, the Spaniard has maintained the top spot on the ATP World Tour en route to denying Federer his record-tying 14th Grand Slam when he defeated him at the Australian Open this past year.
