Caster Semenya: Hermaphrodite

Caster Semenya: Hermaphrodite

By S. D.

As many of you might know, Caster Semenya (from South Africa) recently won the women`s 800-meter world title. However, it was discovered that she is a hermaphrodite - she has something called androgen insensitivity syndrome. (She has a vagina, but also internal testes which make her have three times the amount of testosterone as a normal woman would.)

I highly recommend reading this article, especially since it includes a lot of interesting and specific information about Caster`s condition.

This is a very interesting case, and everyone seems to have their own unique opinion on it. Here is some food for thought for YOU:

Do you think she should be allowed to compete as a woman?
If not, do you think she should be allowed to compete as a man?
Again, if not, do you think she should just not be allowed to compete at all?
Furthermore, do you think that anyone with "a genetic anomaly" (that is, 1 in every 100 people) should not be allowed to compete in such races?
