A 1.8 Million Euro three year project will begin in February this year. The goal of the project: to produce computing technology that utilizes lipid layers of cells in place of silicon chips and conventional computing storage technology. The project takes the lipid-protein reaction of cells as its starting point and uses the so-called B-Z reaction to harness its power. When the element Bromine is increased in the reaction, pathways for reacting proteins passing through the lipid layers and the cells and increases in productivity. The period of time where the chemical signal is introduced creates what is called the refractory period " in the cell, where no new reactions take place, and data can be collected. The whole process is inspired partially by the functioning of neurons. The goal is to create a wet computer " which can perform operations normal computers cannot.
Project collaborator Dr Zauner told BBC news, that "The type of wet information technology we are working towards will not find its near-term application in running business software, But it will open up application domains where current IT does not offer any solutions - controlling molecular robots, fine-grained control of chemical assembly, and intelligent drugs that process the chemical signals of the human body and act according to the local biochemical state of the cell." All the uses for this future technology are amazing and could truly push computer technology to a much higher phase of development. When combined with the growing AI " artificial intelligence "in the world of information systems and technology, what does the future hold for humanity?
Androids could become a reality and robotics in general could advance itself to the highest level. Difficult diseases could find their cure in the chemical reactions and science behind the advancement of this new work. New solutions for the preservation of life could take shape. Nano-technology which extends life would be a possibility, along with the technology to create beings that protect and defend. This technology will be extremely powerful, but will the human race be ready for its abilities?
