Summer is Here

Summer is Here

By Terry Sumerlin (Mentor/Columnist)

During the summer, customers at J.B.’s Barber Shop often make the comment: “I’ve never just walked in and gotten right in the chair before. This must be a good time to come in. I’ll have to remember this." I usually respond, “Well, it’s a good time today." I then explain that during the summer it’s hard to predict business patterns, since folks are off their regular schedules.

Kids may be at camp or on vacation with their parents. Customers talk of going away for a weekend, a week or all summer.

This reminds me of when I first started at the shop. I had a hard time making conversation with certain customers. So sometimes I’d ask, “Are you going to take a vacation this summer?"

One old-timer replied in a voice as dry as last year’s bird nest, “I’ve been on vacation the last 30 years." So much for that approach.

Although at times it can be a bit difficult to deal with the fluctuations in business that summer and vacation periods bring, for most they provide a needed change of pace. Travel also brings a benefit in addition to the change of pace and scenery: it broadens our minds.

Mark Twain said: Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry and narrow-mindedness. Broad, wholesome, charitable views cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth."

BARBER-OSOPHY: To cure narrow-mindedness broaden your horizons.
