Woman welder wins big with Microfinance Loan
Hardly anyone believed a young, female welder in Peru could be successful, but Miss Micro-Entrepreneur Maria Ester Landa proved them wrong. She's a jet engine welder and Peru's "Miss Micro-Entrepreneur" of 2006.
As teenagers, Maria and her sister took a welding class offered by CARE. After working several years for others, Maria decided to start her own business and turned to CARE for a microfinance loan. She repaid the loan in just one year, and today she owns three successful businesses!
Maria is not alone-- thousands of poor women are ready to follow her example, and you can help provide them the opportunity. Urge your members of Congress to co-sponsor the GROWTH Act. The GROWTH Act will help women lift themselves and their communities out of poverty by providing:
- Loans to help women start and grow their own businesses
- Skills training for women
- Information about their legal rights in the workplace
- Stronger women's land and property rights so that assets can be used as collateral
Today, you can help thousands of other women fulfill their dreams and unleash their potential by asking your members of Congress to co-sponsor the GROWTH Act.
