You Are Here for a Purpose!
You are here for a purpose! You are not an accident of fate, of human evolution, or of Providence. There is a reason for your existence. In short, there is a purpose for your life. Napoleon Hill is a famous, self-help author. He is the author of notable books, such as Think and Grow Rich, How to Sell Your Way Through Life, and The Law of Success. Napoleon Hill is quoted to have said this about purpose:
There is one quality that one must possess to win, and
that is definiteness of purpose (emphasis mine), the
knowledge of what one wants, and the burning desire
to possess it.
Mr. Hill seems to suggest that in order to win " in whatever arena you are competing " one must have a purpose that one is clear about.
What is purpose? Many books have been written about purpose, most notably Rick Warren`s book, The Purpose-Driven Life. There are people seem to exude a sense of purpose; others seem to be sorely lacking in it. Let me offer my definition of purpose:
Purpose is living life with passion, productivity, and power.
It is doing what you love, as you dream and desire. It is doing
what you love as you live, and lead. It is involving yourself in
Let`s take apart this definition as we seek to understand purpose more clearly.
Purpose is living life with passion, productivity, and power. Does what you do for a living ignite the fires of passion in your soul? Maybe, what you do for your living is different from what you do for your life. It may be the case that you have a day job while you are working on your dream job. If this is the case, then it is your work on your dream job that lights your fire, so to speak.
That which fills us with passion also is a motivator for productivity: The ability to do something efficiently. It is much easier to get motivated for something that you are excited about than to get motivated for something that does not interest you. When we are passionate and productive with respect to a career, an endeavor, or a cause, it is the source of great power. When you live with purpose, you live with passion, productivity, and power.
Purpose is doing what you love, as you dream and desire. I`ve heard it said that, when you do what you love, you never go to work a day in your life. What do you love to do? If you could put monetary considerations aside, what kind of career, hobby, or endeavor would you engage in? I don`t want to seem like an out-of-touch idealist. Every day I live with the understanding that it takes money to live and that we all have a particular quality of life for which we strive. On the other hand, many of us only live to work and others of us work, but do not enjoy what we do. I want to encourage us to do what we love, even if we have to do what we have to do until we can do what we want to do. When we are able to do what we love, it fuels further dreams and desires. That is part of what purpose is all about.
Purpose is doing what you love, as you live and lead. We have already established that we need to do what we love; that is what life is all about. Also, we should do what we love, as we lead. Perhaps, you do not think that you are a leader. I beg to differ. Anyone who has an ability to influence another is a leader. So, a parent is a leader. So is a coach or a teacher. A manager is a leader, so is an entrepreneur. The captain of the football team is a leader; a summer camp volunteer is, too. I think that loving what you do lends itself naturally to leadership. When you love what you do, when I love what I do, we want to share what we do with others, in order to influence them. That`s leadership!
Purpose is involving yourself in your passion until you die. We don`t like to discuss death in this society. Most definitely, it is not the topic of polite dinner conversation. As a manager at a privately-held hospice, I deal with death every day. Hence, death is a part of my world. I think about dying. Also, I think about dying (I want to die when I`m 100 years old, by the way), having owed this world nothing. In other words, I want to be able to say, on my deathbed, that I have done everything that I had in my heart to do. At the top of the list is to die having lived out my passion. I`m still striving to do this, to be sure. I want to live my life with purpose-- for the rest of my life, until I take my last breath. My greatest hope, as I write these words, is that you would, too.
