Fresh Voices to Provide a GPS Navigational System of Thinking
I met recently with a third-party client who is hosting a 1,000-person trade show at the Orlando Marriott World Center within the next 45 days. Her corporate client has experienced a number of market gyrations in its industry and was considering canceling the meeting, but decided to gut it out. Their philosophy is that it will be a better experience to bring their core clients together to showcase that they are doing well despite the marketplace rumors.
My client has been a meeting planner for over 20 years, working with high-end corporate and incentive meetings. In our initial meeting, she said, Simon, I have seen a ton a speakers over the years and usually work with the Washington Speakers Bureau. If, and only if, we were to select you, I do not want yesterday`s speech. This corporation and its customers need tomorrow`s thinking! "
It reminded me of the old Wayne Gretsky quote " I don`t skate to where the puck is, I skate to where the puck is going to be! " OK, so you say, Simon, I am not into sports, do you have something else? " Here is another one that I dug up from the archives; I don`t know who said it, but I like it: The future is not a result of choices among alternative paths offered by the present, but a place that is created " created first in the mind and will be, created next in activity. The future is not some place we are going to, but one we are creating. "
Tomorrow`s thinking is understanding how the future is created in the present. When you arrive into the future and call it today, everything that you did yesterday meets you and says, Welcome, we`ve been waiting for you. " OK, I know you may be saying that sounds like New Age mysticism. What`s the point? There are several emerging trends that will require fresh voices to provide a GPS navigational system of thinking to prepare companies and organizations for the new-new reality that we are being ushered into at warp speed. Are you the Neo in your organization that will lead them out of the Matrix?
What are you doing to implement tomorrow`s thinking into you day to day professional life?
Here are 10 trends that will impact the future. Consider their implications on your organization, industry, and market:
1. Rises in eco-literacy, green practices, and ethical consumption
2. Increasing economic power of women
3. Increasing political and economic impact of diversity " minorities are one-third of the U.S. population
4. Baby Boomer retirement and unretirement; talent shortages
5. Deepening personalization of products, services, communications, and experiences
6. Rise in mobile and location-based Web services as smart " phones displace laptops
7. Nanotechnology: the next trillion-dollar market
8. Social media explosion creating new approaches for engagement, communication, publishing, and marketing
9. Widening generational gap: value, attitudes, behaviors, and techno-literacy
10. Energy: increasing demand and rising costs accelerate the search for alternative sources
I realize that Yesterday`s speech may have been a what-got-me-here, but tomorrow`s thinking will keep me here. Every speaker or thought leader that your organization invests in should have something fresh to say. Yesterday`s speech "may it forever rest in peace.
