Luxury Hotel "Survivor Package": $19 For Room, But No Bed

Luxury Hotel "Survivor Package": $19 For Room, But No Bed

By Robert Paul Reyes

"The Rancho Bernardo Inn, a luxury resort with three pools, two restaurants, a spa and a golf course, is offering rooms this summer for as little as $19 a night.

There`s just one catch. The room comes without pillows, sheets, towels, toiletries - or a bed.

From Aug. 16 to 31, the Rancho Bernardo Inn is offering steep discounts to customers willing to bring their own toilet paper and sleep on the floor.

Under the unusual pricing scheme called the `Survivor Package,` guests can lower the standard $219 room rate with each amenity they give up. Going without breakfast, the honor bar, air-conditioning and pillows saves $80. Bringing your own sheets saves an additional $20, while the room rate drops $20 more if you also give up lights" Jennifer Godwin/Union-Tribune

When I travel I usually stay at a dive with a moniker like Sleazy Eazy Motel, but if I`m ever in the San Diego area I will upgrade to the Rancho Bernardo Inn.

I`ll take advantage of the "Survivor Package", but I will miss the toiletries. I always take a few toiletries with me as a souvenir.

I`m willing to give up just about any amenity, if it means that I will pay less for a hotel room. But I won`t give up access to my room`s bathroom; I refuse to walk down the hall and use a public restroom.

It`s not a bad deal, you give up a few amenities, but you have access to three pools and a golf course. When I`m at the golf course with the other guests, they don`t have to know that I slept in a tent in my room.

This is a terrific promotion, folks who take advantage of the "Survivor Package" might fall in love with the place and return again and pay the normal rates.

In these hard economic times hotels have to think outside the box, and come up with imaginative ways to lure travelers.
