Girl Power comes to Smallville this fall

Girl Power comes to Smallville this fall

By Garrett Godwin

It will be twice Super when Clark Kent meets his cousin in the new season of Smallville starts later this month. Season seven marks of the introduction of Supergirl (Laura Vandervoort), aka Kara from Krypton, Kal-El's cousin.  "She came to Earth at the same time, but her ship crashed in the water", states the actress at Comic Con, leaving her character in suspended animation for 18 years.  However, when Kara gets out, Vandervoort continues, she sets out to find Clark, whom she thinks is still a baby, but never expected him to be full-grown as well as handsome.  It will take the young future super heroine awhile to trust Clark, but realizes that it is really her cousin.

"I have all the same powers that Clark has, except for one -- very important one --, which is I can fly", said the 22-year-old Vandervoort.

This season will find Clark becoming a mentor to his cousin as well as learning more about his Kryptonian heritage.

Expect Supergirl to shake things up at Smallville, according to creators Miles Millar and Alfred Gough, as she becomes involved in a love triangle with budding villain Lex Luthor (Michael Rosenbaum) and budding Daily Planet photographer Jimmy Olsen (Aaron Ashmore).

And speaking of The Daily Planet, Lois Lane will finally become a reporter there.  But what Erica Durnace wishes is that her character will become the Lois Lane fans have known and love for years, which is "kicking butt and taking numbers, and getting stories".  And Lois, according to the 29-year-old actress, will have a possible love interest in the form of the Planet's new editor, who hires her and represents everything that Lois wants to be, such as a successful journalist.  And also expect to hold her own against Lex, but still makes trouble for Clark, aka Smallville.

"It's a kick.  I really enjoy it," she continues.  "It's been a rollercoaster, but it's been a fun one, and I'm very grateful for doing this."

Smallville's seventh season starts September 27 at 8pm on the CW.
