NTSB Final Report on the George Washington Parkway Bus Accident
The National Transportation Safety Board will hold a public Board meeting Tuesday, November 21, at 9:30 a.m., in its Board Room and Conference Center, 429 L'Enfant Plaza, S.W., Washington, D.C.
There is one item on the agenda. The Board will consider a final report on the following accident:
On November 14, 2004, at about 10:40 a.m., a motor coach carrying 27 high school students, a chaperone and a driver collided with the bottom of the Alexandria Avenue Bridge crossing the George Washington Parkway in Alexandria, Virginia. The 12-foot-high bus was in the Parkway's right lane and the bridge had a posted 10 foot, 2-inch clearance at that point. The left lane had a clearance of 13 feet, 4 inches. The bus driver was talking on a hands free cell phone at the time of the accident. The bus's roof was destroyed; 10 students received minor injuries and another received serious injuries.
