Deputy SECDEF Hosts Town Hall Meeting in Bahrain

By SOP newswire

MANAMA, Bahrain (NNS) -- Deputy Secretary of Defense (DEPSECDEF) Gordon England hosted a town hall meeting while aboard Naval Support Activity (NSA) Bahrain Jan 22.

Before a collected audience of more than 500 military and civilians from NSA Bahrain and its 76 tenant commands, England said his visit to Bahrain served two objectives.

“I have two purposes for coming to Bahrain today. The first purpose is to thank the magnificent men and women who serve our nation, and for what they do for America in this part of the world,” said England. “And the second purpose is to come and give the same message to the leadership in Bahrain."

“This time I had the opportunity to meet with his majesty [King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa] and his leadership to not only discuss issues in the Gulf region, but also to thank him for his great leadership of this country, and for his very, very strong voice of moderation here in the Middle East,” he said.

Following the address, England took time to individually meet with service members and posed for photographs.

“This is a very important place for America here in Bahrain,” he said. “It’s important to have our 5th Fleet stationed here because it gives us access to this part of the world. It’s terrific to have a homeport with an ally.”

England served as the 73rd Secretary of the Navy and is the second person in history to serve twice as the Navy’s top official, and the first to serve in back-to-back terms.
