Tornados Strike U.S. killing at least 44

Feb. 6, 2008-- Authorities say a string of tornadoes killed at least 44 people and left a path of destruction across three southern U.S. states Tuesday.

At least 24 people died in Tennessee, including five people outside the city of Nashville. A shopping mall in the city of Memphis sustained major damage, while several students at a college in the nearby city of Jackson were trapped for several hours after their dormitory was destroyed.

The twisters killed at least 13 people in the state of Arkansas, including at least nine in the small Arkansas town of Atkins. At least seven are dead in Kentucky, including a couple and their adult daughter.

The deadly storms also injured scores of other people, and destroyed or damaged many homes and businesses.

Tornadoes, wind damage and hail also were reported in the states of Mississippi, Oklahoma, Texas, and Missouri.
