Meeting Between M. Jacques Chirac, President of the Republic, and M. Mahmoud Abbas

By SOP newswire

President Chirac welcomed the President of the Palestinian Authority, Mr Mahmoud Abbas, thanking him for his visit. He told him that he greatly appreciated the gesture of friendship of the Mayor of Ramallah (who has decided to name a Ramallah road after him) which he sees as a demonstration of the ties uniting our two peoples.

President Chirac stressed that France is the friend of the Palestinian people as of all the region's peoples, and is pursuing a policy designed to promote the coexistence of two States in peace and security, and with mutual respect.

President Chirac told President Abbas that France supports his efforts since he embodies the Palestinian people's commitment to peace. In this respect, he viewed the formation of the national unity government, following the Mecca agreement, as a positive development. He reiterated that France is arguing for the resumption of aid to the Palestinians, particularly the European aid. This is what she will be doing at the General Affairs Council on 23 April. President Chirac considered it was important to strengthen relations between the Palestinian Authority and European Union since, he said, "the EU must be a player committed to serving peace in the region".

Lebanon was also discussed, and President Chirac explained to the Palestinian Authority President the reasons why France deems it essential and urgent to create the international tribunal.

Finally, President Chirac thanked the Palestinian Authority President for the efforts deployed to get the BBC correspondent held hostage released as quickly as possible./.
