Turkish Constitutional Court rejects attempts to block Constitutional packet

By SOP newswire

The Turkish Constitutional Court has disclosed its much awaited decision in reference to the applications by both the main opposition CHP and President Ahmet Necdet Sezer to have the AKP-backed Constitutional packet cancelled, and has in fact ruled to reject these applications.

The date for the upcoming referendum on this constitutional change has been clarified as October 21, and it has been also clarified that presidential elections would take place every 4 years.
Thus the Turkish Constitutional Court, by rejecting the 3 separate applications by President Sezer and the main opposition CHP to have the Constitutional packet blocked, has opened the way to direct election of the Turkish president by the people of the nation.
