Ukraine racing to save miners
Officials in Ukraine say emergency workers rescued 23 miners Monday trapped since an explosion early Sunday at a coal mine in the eastern Donetsk region.
Officials say emergency teams went into the mine to rescue 21 miners after earlier recovering two miners and one body.
Thirteen miners remain missing in the century-old Karl Marx mine, which is in danger of flooding.
Rescuers went into the mine today after hearing voices coming from a damaged mine shaft.
Miners were making repairs to improve safety conditions when the blast occurred one kilometer underground early Sunday.
Four workers above ground suffered burns and other injuries from the blast.
Work has recently been suspended at mines in the region, following a blast on May 23 that left several people dead.
Deadly accidents are a regular occurrence at many of Ukraine`s outdated mines.
