American Journalist Leaves Iran After Unlawful Detainment

By Christopher HIllenbrand

Roxana Saberi, an American journalist incarcerated from being falsely accusated of spying, has left Iran and is now in safe hands, according to her attorney.

Saberi`s attorney, Abdolsamad Khorramshahi, reported that his client left the country bound for Europe early Friday morning at a time between 3 A.M. and 4 A.M. local time (2230-2330 GMT). However, he did not specify exactly where in Europe she was arriving.

The 32-year-old`s family announced they were preparing to leave Iran shortly, after fighting to free their loved one on the charges she was facing while spending four months in an Iranian prison. Saberi was found guilty of espionage charges after an abrupt, closed-door trial, and originally had been sentenced to eight years in prison.

The dual Iranian-American citizen was released on Monday, to a warm reception from her relatives eagerly awaiting for her release. An appeals court in Iran reduced the maximum term, in accordance with the country`s law, to a lesser two-year suspended sentence.
