Hakeemullah Mehsud is Dead

By Ernest Dempsey

Actively hunted Pakistani Taliban leader Hakeemullah Mehsud has been declared dead by news sources, including the state-run Pakistan Television and private media channels as well as the international media. Hakeemullah had been seriously wounded in a drone attack in Shaktoi, Waziristan, earlier this month.

The drone attack made on January 14, 2010, was rumored to have killed Hakeemullah Mehsud. But the Taliban militants denied the claims of Mehsud`s death; and, a few days later, released an audio tape in which Mehsud  had allegedly told in his own voice that he was alive. Speculations about his death remained till today when local Taliban sources confirmed Mehsud`s death as well as burial in the Orakzai Agency.

SAMAA TV, a popular private TV Channel, showed detailed coverage of Mehsud`s story, telling about his birth in 1981, schooling in a religious school in Hangu, and succeeding Baitullah Mehsud to become the chief commander of Pakistan`s Taliban Movement. It was revealed that Mehsud had been in Orakzai after he was wounded and one or more doctors had been forcibly taken from Hangu to treat Mehsud.

It is worth mentioning that SAMAA TV had already reported the suspected death of Mehsud three days ago but other popular media channels had no knowledge of the fact till today when the news broke out among the media both nationally and internationally. As of now, either of Wali-ur Rehman and Qari Hussain is expected to be chosen as the new Taliban chief.
