Taliban Leader Hakimullah Mehsud Still Alive

Taliban Leader Hakimullah Mehsud Still Alive

By Ernest Dempsey

The chief leader of Pakistani Taliban movement Hakimullah Mehsud survived the drone attack in South Waziristan in January, in which he was assumed to have been killed. International mediawere informed by an official of the Inter Services Intelligence (ISI), on April 28, 2010, that Hakimullah Mehsud is alive.

The news sources report that the said official spoke on the condition of anonymity. He told that contrary to the Interior Ministry`s claim of Mehsud`s death in the CIA drone attack of January 2010, the Taliban chief only sustained a few injuries; but he is alive and basically okay.

The ISI official also denied the report that called the capture of Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar accidental; he attributed it to the effort of Pakistani authorities. He also shared that the ISI will be willing to negotiate with Taliban if asked by the US and Afghan governments.

The official admitted that ISI had once been close to Jalaluddin Haqqani, an Al-Qaeda linked terrorist, as considered by the US. However, ISI does not retain close ties with Haqqani anymore.
