Defenders say Florida has Turtle Troubles

Florida sea turtles are headed for trouble. In fact, loggerhead nesting in the state was at an all-time low last year.

To protect essential sea turtle nesting areas, Defenders is collaborating with our conservation partners and officials on the local, state and federal levels.

For example, we're working with the Caribbean Conservation Corporation in Bay County to reduce the impact the Panama City beach renourishment project will have on loggerhead, green, leatherback, and Kemp's ridley sea turtles. The nesting season on Florida's Gulf Coast begins May 1, and we are working to ensure that before any further beach renourishment occurs, Bay County has a protective lighting ordinance in place. We also want to make sure that any work on the beach will not be harmful to sea turtles.
