Christian Militias And Tea Party: Threat To Our Democracy
"It started inside a trailer home in rural Michigan, where a small family gathered before bed for prayer. Years later, the private devotions had evolved into a small militia of `Christian warriors` preparing to fight the Antichrist.
The changes in David Brian Stone`s personal theology destroyed his marriage, his former wife said, and prosecutors claim they later led him to hatch a plot to kill police officers " an act the militia hoped would touch off an uprising against the government.
Prosecutors believe that Stone, 44, of Clayton, Mich., is the ringleader of the Hutaree militia, a name the group`s Web site says they created to mean "Christian warrior." He was among nine members arrested during a series of raids in three Midwestern states, which federal officials said they carried out after monitoring the group since last summer and learning they planned to launch their attack next month." http://www.mercurynews.com/ci_14778313?source=most_viewed
I don`t feel a lot of love for police officers when one one them pulls me over and issues me a ticket, but I realize that they protect and serve the community. If it weren`t for our courageous police officers risking their lives to protect us, our society would quickly dissolve into anarchy.
But an alarming number of Tea Party members, Christian fundamentalists and and other conservative riff raff view cops as agents of the Antichrist.
There is a lot of hate brewing in the Tea Party Movement, the militia movement and other outposts of right-wing America, and it`s being stoked by Sarah Palin who uses violent imagery in her speeches, and other Republican leaders who demonize President Obama and the Democratic-controlled Congress.
Tea Party members have already committed acts of vandalism and issued death threats against Democratic politicians, how long will it be before they also start gunning down law enforcement officials?
I write for a newspaper and several Web sites, it`s no exaggeration to say that millions have read my essays in the decade that I`ve been writing. I`ve received hundreds of emails accusing me of being in league with the Antichrist. Not all of these letters are from ignorant yahoos living in trailer parks, many are from professionals. It`s scary how many intelligent people believe that the federal government is evil, and that law enforcement officials do the bidding of the Antichrist.
Fringe elements within the Tea Party movement and Christian militias are a threat not only to police officers, but to all of us. They are a threat to democracy, and they must be taken down.
We are so preoccupied with the external threat from al Qaeda, that we are neglecting the internal threat from these homegrown Christian terrorists on a mission from God to destroy our democracy.
Defeat Christian terrorism, hug a cop, listen to NPR and join the Democratic Party!
