Gunman forces lock down at Appalachian State University
BOONE, N.C.-- Appalachian State University was issued into a lock down around 5:00 today after a masked gunman was seen heading towards the campus on Hill Street which is walking distance from the campus.
An emergency email was issued to the students on campus warning them of the gunman and a few minutes later, the email told faculty to lock down the campus.
Police cars lined the streets and helicopters were spotted in the sky.
Around 6:30 the lock down was lifted and police encouraged students to return to their homes and dormitories.
By 7:00, students filled Welborn Cafeteria for dinner. Police were nearby. Some were even in the cafeteria.
Though the gunman was not sighted after the lock down, nor apprehended, Boone police said they did not think there was any further threat posed.
Classes continue to be cancelled tonight, but Tuesday they resume as scheduled.
