South Ossetian President Eduard Kokoity Meets with Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Grigory Karasin

State Secretary, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Grigory Karasin met on September 4 with President of South Ossetia Eduard Kokoity.

During the conversation, a thorough exchange of views took place on the state of affairs in the Georgian-Ossetian zone of conflict, on the causes of the sharp aggravation of the situation and on the measures to counter the whipping-up of tensions.

A detailed characterization was given of the circumstances of the provocation with the August 6 air incident in the Georgian-Ossetian zone of conflict and the arrest and holding of two Ossetian peacekeepers who are Russian citizens in custody. Mutual concern was expressed over the planned “march” on Tskhinvali.

There was emphasized the striving to return the situation into the constructive mainstream of the three-stage program of settlement, and in this context, the importance was noted of holding the next meeting of the Mixed Control Commission with the participation of all the parties involved in the settlement process as soon as possible.
