Atheists And Christians Engage In Ad Wars

Atheists And Christians Engage In Ad Wars

By Robert Paul Reyes

"An atheists` group and a church are taking their rivalry on the road, using ad space on Madison Transit buses to display their competing messages." http://apnews.myway.com/article/20090312/D96SMQG00.html

One of the signs put up by "The Freedom From Religion Foundation" reads: I am free from the slavery of religion. The Pilgrims Covenant Church countered with an ad that declares: The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God.

It`s interesting to note that the church is spending more than twice as the atheist group for their ads. I`m sure the working poor who ride the bus would appreciate a warm meal from the church more than a sign mocking unbelievers.

The message "The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God" will resonate only with those who are already Christians. It will strengthen their faith, and give them a sense of superiority over those who don`t believe in any deity. Great just what we need: More self-righteous believers.

The message "I am free from the slavery of religion" might upset the pious, but it won`t convert them to atheism or agnosticism.

Instead of battling it out on the buses, the competing groups should pool their financial resources and feed the hungry of Madison, Wis.
