Swine Flu Parties: Really Happening Or Urban Myth?

Port Charles: The town where good and evil exist.

By Garrett Godwin

The town Port Charles has been known for several reasons:

General Hospital

Luke and Laura

Mob boss Sonny Corinthos

But what people don't know is that Port Charles is also known for the supernatural.

Port Charles was originally a spinoff of General Hospital in 1997, where young interns strive to succeed not only as in the medical world, but also seek romance both in and out of the hospital.  It had crossovers featuring characters from the parent show such as Dr. Alan Quartermaine (Stuart Damon).

In December of 2000, the show finally came into its own, when PC writers and producers changed the format using the storytelling format found in telenovelas, Spanish-speaking soap operas in which there is a beginning, middle, and an end.  In this case, they were live-action books, and its first book, "Fate", debued that month.

The books lasted 13 weeks each, but some of the storylines continue in the next one.

Port Charles hit its stride in the summer of 2001, when Michael Easton joined the cast as seductive vampire Caleb Morley, who took a bit out of the town in its third book, "Tainted Love".  The show received critical praise and a devoted following since.  What make PC also good is Kelly Monaco, who joined the cast in 1999.  Her character, Olivia "Livvie" Locke went from heroine to sexy daytime bad girl, which makes us either to love and/or hate her.  Either way, how can you keep your eyes off of them!

However, there was still time for romance in the town of Port Charles,  and there were great supercouples, and here are some of them:

Kevin and Lucy

Ian and Eve

Caleb and Livvie

Rafe and Alison

Port Charles is also known for its books named after popular songs such as the fourth book, "Tempted" sung by 80s band Squeeze.  From 1997 to 2003, Port Charles has cranked out a dozen books, including "Torn", "Naked Eyes", and "Surrender".  Sadly, despite a legion of fans, Port Charles was cancelled in 2003 due to low ratings.  It ended with cliffhangers, such as Alison (Erin Hershey Presley), finally married to Rafe (Brian Gaskill), is unknowingly pregnant with Caleb's child in the final book, "The Gift".

But some of its cast members went on to have success with other soaps.  For instance, Michael Easton is on the right side of law and human as brooding cop John McBain on One Life to Live.  Kelly Monaco stay in Port Charles, this time also human as feisty Samantha "Sam" McCall on General Hospital and found even more success on the reality show, Dancing with the Stars.

However, Port Charles is beloved by its fans and will be missed as a show about the inner and outer battles between good and evil; light and darkness; the balance between good and evil; Heaven and Hell, and the eternal power of love.
