The Stargate mythology continues with Atlantis: Season One on DVD

By Garrett Godwin

The Stargate saga adds another layer in its story with its spin-off, Stargate Atlantis: Season One, available on DVD.

The spin-off came from Stargate SG-1 showrunners Brad Wright and Robert C. Cooper, who wanted to end the original at the close of season seven with the finding of Atlantis.  But Stargate SG-1 continues to do well in the ratings, and the SCIFI Channel renewed it.

Atlantis follows a new Stargate Command team exploring the Lost City of the Ancients, who were supposed to be the original buliders of the Stargate network.

The original Atlantis team consists of:

Dr. Elizabeth Weir (Torri Higginson), the leader

Major John Sheppard (Joe Flanigan), the military expert and co-leader of the Atlantis expedition

Lt. Aiden Ford (Rainbow Sun Francks), Sheppard's friend and right-hand man

Dr. Rodney McKay (David Hewlett), brilliant but annoying

Joining the team is warrior woman Teyla Emmagan (Rachel Luttrell).

Season one finds the team learning more about Atlantis while battling their arch-nemesis, the Wraith-- who survive by feeding on humans.  They also must find a way to get back home to Earth.

Featuring all 20 episodes, Stargate Atlantis: Season One includes audio commentaries of the season's pivotal episodes, and much more. Episode highlights from the freshman year include:

"Thirty-Eight Minutes" - Trapped in a Puddle Jumper and stuck in the Stargate, the team must find a way to get back to Atlantis -- and save Sheppard's life in the process.

"Suspicion": Teyla finds herself under investigation when there's a spy within Atlantis.

"Underground": The introduction of the Genii, who may or may not be an ally for the Atlantis team in their fight against the Wraith

"Home": After receiving enough power to get back to Earth, the team discovers that everything isn't as it seems.

"The Storm"/"The Eye": This two-parter finds the Genii taking control of Atlantis, and it is up to Sheppard and his team to save the city.

The last few episodes find the Atlantis team preparing their upcoming, climactic battle against the Wraith, but it is also weighing on their shoulders, leading to the finale, "The Siege".

Continue to explore more new worlds in another galaxy with Stargate Atlantis: Season One, available on DVD.
