FT. PIERCE, Fla.--Florida public assistance fraud case results in 9 arrests

A regional sweep by law enforcement agencies resulted in nine arrests in cases of public assistance fraud throughout the Treasure Coast on Wednesday.

The operation was conducted by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement as a regional effort to seek out individuals who defraud the state of Florida of cash welfare benefits, food stamps, Medicaid and childcare benefits. The sweep is a tool to ensure the maximum amount of assistance reaches those in real need.

The offenders facing charges after Wednesday`s sweep defrauded the state of Florida of more than $92,000. In 2004-05, more than $17 million in public assistance fraud was detected and referred for investigation in Florida.

In that time, 3,910 cases of public assistance fraud were investigated.

Assisting in today`s operation were the St. Lucie County Sheriff`s Office, Martin County Sheriff`s Office, Indian River County Sheriff`s Office, Vero Beach PD, and Florida Department of Law Enforcement.
