Important Notice to Occupants of FEMA Trailers in New York

By SOP newswire

ALBANY, N.Y. -- In anticipation of a severe winter storm for the Southern Tier and much of New York State , State and Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) officials urge travel trailer occupants to use caution.

In coordination with county emergency managers, FEMA staff working out of the Binghamton Field Office are calling each of the occupants of the 64 travel trailers to make sure they are ready for the severe weather and to answer any questions.

FEMA and State officials know that travel trailer occupants are used to harsh winter weather, but issued the following tips:

  • Use only the trailer's built-in heater. Do not use secondary heat sources such as kerosene heaters or electric space heaters.
  • People in need of a warmer place to stay are urged to check with friends and family members who may be able to help.
  • If emergency shelter is needed, contact the local officials.

FEMA Federal Coordinating Officer Marianne C. Jackson said, "We are all taking the necessary precautions and hoping the storm is not severe."

FEMA manages federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident, initiates mitigation activities and manages the National Flood Insurance Program. FEMA works closely with state and local emergency managers, law enforcement personnel, firefighters and other first responders.  FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security on March 1, 2003
