Salmonella Contamination Scare Is Far Worse Than First Expected

Salmonella Contamination Scare Is Far Worse Than First Expected

By Christopher HIllenbrand

The Union International Food Co. is now including their Lian How and Uncle Chen brand sauces, oil and oil products of all sizes in a company-issued spice recall on the suspicion that the items may be contaminated with salmonella. Salmonella is a microbe that may cause serious life-threatening complications in children, the elderly, and those suffering with immunodeficiencies. Union International originally pulled products in their Lian How and Uncle Chen line of dry spices.

Officials from the California State Health Department said that the salmonella contaminated products have made 33 people ill in northern and central California, while nine more were reported in Nevada, Oregon, and Washington. No deaths have been confirmed as a result of the tainted brands.

Officials also announced that most of the people afflicted by the bacteria reported signs of sickness after dining at Asian eateries that featured the company`s spices in their food.

Union International claimed they issued the recall once they isolated a case of salmonella found in an open bottle of Lian How white pepper.

The company`s Uncle Chen and Lian How brands were sold to various distributors, retailers, restaurant depots, and restaurants.
