The Dying Songs of the Motherland

The Dying Songs of the Motherland

By Kathryn Were Omwandho

I sit and watch you,

Watch you,

Watch them,

I sit here and hear you curse,

The very beat that makes your soul,

Look at you,

What have you become?

No longer real, all about you is fecal

I sit here, tears fill my eyes,

The songs are going to waste,

The beat, lost in the wind,

My African people,

Anyone who has inhaled,

The sweet scent of  Africa

My African people,

Open your eyes,

Our culture is dying,

Our music is withering,

Awaken the drums,

Awaken the morning song,

Awaken your hearts.
