Judyth Piazza chats with Phil Wilkins, Author of the Wealthy Entrepreneur

Phil Wilkins is a business owner, consultant, and author of "The Wealthy Entrepreneur." He owns three businesses: Diverse Wealth Systems which is a training and consulting organization, Rising Star, Inc. which owns and operates four McDonald's restaurants in Lexington, Kentucky, and PJK Holdings a real estate investment company.

Phil began his McDonald's career on July 1, 1997, in Cincinnati, Ohio, and faced many challenges including three new competitors, a young management team, and low capital reserves. In August of 2000, Phil traded his restaurant in Cincinnati for a restaurant in Lexington, and immediately began rebuilding a second restaurant in the market that opened in November of 2000. His third restaurant opened in July 2001, substantially beating projections. He acquired his fourth restaurant January 1, 2002.

As a result of teamwork and a lot of hard work, Rising Star's restaurants are ranked in the top 10% of the nation in Mystery Shop Scores and Profitability. The goal of Rising Star, Inc. is to be a model organization within the McDonald's system, balancing people, profit, and operations.

Planning for Diverse Wealth Systems began in 2002, following a presentation by Magic Johnson that inspired Phil to pursue his goal of becoming a consultant and trainer and to help people reach their goals of economic empowerment and balanced lifestyles.

Currently, Phil sits on the Board of Directors for the National Black McDonald's Operators Association, McDonald's Regional Leadership Council, the North Lexington YMCA, Kentucky Science and Technology Corporation, and Lexington United. Phil is also a Visiting Professor in the Urban League's Black Executive Exchange Program.
