Many companies throw money straight into the trash every day and don`t even know it. Because of this, Hidden Wealth Consultants (HWC) has published a report showing how businesses can reduce their garbage bills by hundreds or even thousands of dollars a month and recover thousands or tens of thousands of dollars.

"The problem is that over 99 percent of business people, including accountants, are not trained in this extremely specialized area. They don`t understand how the garbage bills are constructed from the ground up," said Roger Noorthoek, president of Hidden Wealth Consultants, a company that helps businesses recovers hidden overcharges on various types of bills on a contingency basis.

There are hundreds of ways businesses can be overcharged on their sanitation bill. In many cases, municipalities or garbage companies incorrectly calculate taxes. Garbage bills are often prone towards this. A surprisingly large number of industries are completely exempt from taxes on garbage collection. Sometimes, due a company`s zip code, it is entitled to little known tax breaks or subsidies.

Other ways that businesses can be overcharged include:

* being billed incorrectly for recyclable material charged as waste;

* paying for services that they did not contract for;

* paying unnecessary hazardous waste charges and waste capacity that they never use;

* not getting full discounts and refunds on garbage bills;

* being charged for highest waste volume throughout the year even though the business is seasonal;

* not taking advantage of subsidized waste management in some industries

These overcharges can go on for years and can easily add up to thousands of dollars or more. Money can often be recovered back to 10 years. For example, a recurring overcharge of $100 a month is $1,200 a year and $12,000 over a decade.

Companies can be overcharged because of technology changes, organizational restructuring, changes in regulations or tax law, complex or malfunctioning garbage company billing software and simple error. Over 75% of bills analyzed contain errors, according to Noorthoek.

The report highlights ways to recover hidden overcharges and methods of permanently reducing garbage bills without reducing the quality of service. Businesses also learn the "tricks of the trade" to avoid future overcharges.
