Crucifying the Cash Cow - Identity Crisis Robs Retailer

Crucifying the Cash Cow - Identity Crisis Robs Retailer

By Nancy Lee Wolfe (HR Development/Content Manager)

Retailer, you have placed yourself between the dollar and the devout.  These irrational and suicidal attempts to disguise Christmas behind the bland “Happy Holidays” are insane.  There is only one explanation:  Retailer, you have forgotten your role in the Christmas Story.
Target, you led the way in 2004 when you declared war on Salvation Army Santas.  Both the devout and the demented demanded to know, “Why?”

Wal-Mart, in 2005 you ignored the Target turmoil and forbid your employees to say, “Merry Christmas.”  It cost you.  Have you lost your power to reason?

You have forgotten the 1960’s.  That is when you made it very popular to proudly emblaze “Merry X-mas” in your shop windows.  Fortunately, you were forced to abandon this effort when schoolchildren began confusing Christmas with Malcolm.  Your obsessive, self-destructive behavior rounds a new bend on this road named the 21st Century.  Rather than acknowledge and accept the history, tradition and significance of the celebration, you simply delete it.  Happy Holidays.

The Devil may well be in the details here.  Who is the genius who massed all the holidays together, anyway?  We can all say Merry Christmas. Happy Hanukah and Festivous for the Rest of Us, who cares?  Each will encourage sales.  Why is this an issue for you?

Retailer, you must read the Christmas Story.  You will discover your divine role and the solution to your dilemma.  Your eyes shall be opened, see?  Your annual year-end success is eternally connected to the birth of the Christ child.

It is not your avalanche of advertising, which gathers gift-givers.  It is not the love of shopping which generates up to 50% of your gain.  Gift giving at Christmas is driven by One who taught, “It is better to give than to receive” and “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.”

Here is the profound and amazing truth, Retailer.  You are divinely deemed Eternal Messenger of Good News.  Omniscient God ordained your profit when, after telling the wise men to follow that star, He added, “Oh, by the way, take gifts.”

Put Christ back in Christmas, Retailer.  It will prove to be your salvation.
